graduated from the National Music Academy of Ukraine; in the course of his postgraduate studies at the same Academy he was tutored by Vsevolod Vorobyov. He has won prizes at Ukrainian piano competitions and was a finalist at the 1st and 2nd Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition.
Partnering Oleksandra Zaytseva in the Kiev Piano Duo, he won a number of international competitions, including the CMF International Piano Duo Competition in Paris (2002), Schubert International Piano Duo Competition in the Czech Republic (2005), Piano Six Hands International Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany (2006), Kaunas (2006), and Valberg (2009). He has performed at music festivals in Budapest, Lviv, Kyiv, Sanok, Copenhagen, Roskilde (Schubertiade) Odessa, Yerevan, Berlin (Ukrainian Culture Days), Moscow, and Prague.
Since 1999 he is working with the Kyiv Camerata National Ensemble of Soloists.
Dmytro Tavanets is one of organisers and artistic directors of the Chamber Music Session International Music Festival in Kyiv.
