Schmid Michael
is a musician and flutist specialising in contemporary classical music. He studied the flute with Konrad Hampe in Munich, István Matuz in Budapest, Harri Starreveld in Amsterdam, as well as the recorder with Marten Root in Amsterdam. He is also a graduate of the Royal Conservatory in Amsterdam in modern music and non-European flute techniques, including complex rhythmic systems. A permanent member of the Belgian ictus Ensemble, as a freelancer he has worked with most of the major European new music ensembles, including MusikFabrik, the Ives Ensemble, Nieuw Ensemble, Radio Kamerorkest Hilversum, as well as chamber musicians and conductors including Peter Eötvös, Micha Hamel, Jürgen Hempel, Heinz Holliger, Georges-Elie Octors, Emilio Pomárico, David Porcelijn and Hans Zender.
Apart from his activity as flutist he performs as a vocalist in concrete poetry and has a profound interest in exploring the possibilities of the voice in crossover genres.
Future projects as flute soloist include collaborations with choreographers Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Eszter Salomon and composer Maurice Weddington.
Michael Schmid teaches at the Conservatoire of Gent, where he is also research ing contemporary flute techniques as a PhD student. His interpretations have been recorded by Arte, WDR, Deutschland Radio Berlin and Concertzender. He has published several CDs.
