Krzanowski, Andrzej
(1951–1990)
Born in Bielsko-Biała, composer, accordion player and teacher. He studied at the State School of Music in Katowice: composition with Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (diploma with distinction) and accordion with Joachim Pichura. After completing his studies he worked as a lecturer at the same academy. He was a prizewinner at numerous composers’ competitions, including the Artur Malawski Competition (1976, 1980), Carl Maria von Weber International Competition in Dresden (1978, 1979), Digne-les-Bains Competition (1981, 1987), and Ancona Competition (1986). In 1984–90 he taught modern accordion at the Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt and in 1987, at the Time of Music Summer Academy in Viitasaari. Commissioned by Krzysztof Penderecki, he composed Symphony no. 2 for the Lusławice Festival. In 1986 he received a scholarship from Witold Lutosławski and in 1988, from the Scottish Art Council in Glasgow. After his spectacular debut at the Young Musicians for a Young City festival in Stalowa Wola (1975) he was hailed as one of the main figures of the Stalowa Wola generation of 1951 and the new Silesian School.
