Wang, Ying

Born in Shanghai, she studied at Shanghai Conservatoire and the High School of Music and Dance in Cologne, graduating in musical performance in 2011. In 2010 she also received a master's degree in contemporary music from the High School of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. In 2012 she was selected for the composition course at IRCAM in Paris.

Her music successfully combines the sounds of China with new elements in European avant-garde music. Prof. York Höller (Grawemeyer Award winner) wrote in his assessment of her master's thesis: "Ying Wang will soon be one of the best composers of the young Chinese generation."

She has cooperated with Markus Stenz, Brad Lubman, Marcus Creed, Muhai Tang, Nina Janssen, Camilla Hoitenga, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, German Radio Philharmonic, Gürzenich Orchestra, Brandenburg Symphony, Giessen Philharmonic, Heidelberg Philharmonic, Avanti Orchestra Helsinki, Lucerne Festival Academy Ensemble, Norrbotten - Neo Ensemble, Ensemble Resonanz, Tokyo Sinfonietta, Phace Ensemble, Klangforum Wien, to name but a few.

Her accolades include the International Ensemble Modern Academy Scholarship (2009/10), Matrix 11 and Matrix 12 of the SWR Experimentalstudio, Herrenhaus Edekoben (on recommendation of Peter Eötvös), Giga-Hertz Prize (2013), a composition prize in the Brandenburg Biennale (2013), 35th Irino Prize in Tokyo, and Heidelberg Artist Prize (2017). She was composer-in-residence to the Federal Chancellery of Austria (2014) and at the Forum Neuer Musik, German Radio Cologne (2015). In 2017 she is a Künstlerhof Schreyahn scholarship holder. 2017 also saw the release under the Wergo label of her CD Tun Tu.

She has received commissions for new works from SWR, DLF, WDR, Ernst von Siemens Foundation, Lucerne Festival, North Rhine-Westphalia State Music Council, North Rhine-Westphalia Arts Foundation, Association of Friends of Brandenburg Symphony, and Kassel Musiktage. She resides in Berlin, Vienna, and Shanghai.
