Chołoniewski, Marek

Born in 1953 in Cracow, he studied organ with Leszek Werner, music theory and composition with Bogusław Schaeffer, and electronic music with Józef Patkowski at the Music Academy in Cracow. He now chairs that Academy's Electroacoustic Music Studio and the Audiosphere Workshop of the Department of Intermedia of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. He founded the Music Centre Arts Association and the Polish Association of Electroacoustic Music. Since 2011 he has served as President of the International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music (CIME/ISEM). He writes instrumental and electroacoustic music, radio, lm, and theatre music, and has authored sound and video installations, audiovisual, spatial, and web projects. He is the founder and cofounder of many concert and recording groups, including Freight Train, Studio MCH, CH&K&K (with Krzysztof Knittel and Włodzimierz Kiniorski), mc2 duo (with Marcel Chyrzyński), Double Mark (with Mark Polishook), In nity Quartet (with Keri Neuringer, Rayan Zawel, and Rafał Mazur), Natural Plastic (with Amy Knoles), and Kinetic Trio (with Włodzimierz Kiniorski and Rafał Mazur).

In 1993-99 he was the artistic director of the International Academy for New Composition and Audio Art, a new music festival and composition course he organised with Marianne Penz con Stappershoef in Schwaz, Tirol. Teachers at this festival included many composers and performers from Poland, mainly from Cracow. Later Chołoniewski passed on the directorship to his teacher Bogusław Schaeffer, a lecturer at the Salzburg Mozarteum. Chołoniewski's other important international project is the International Modern Music Workshop Cracow/Stuttgart, which he programmed with Matthias Hermann, professor of the Music Academy in Stuttgart in 1993 and which gathered young composers from Central Europe.

He received the Honorary Award of the Polish Composers' Union, Award of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, as well as the Independent Project grant of the CEC ArtsLink in New York.
