Cattaneo, Aureliano

Born in Italy in 1974, he studied piano and composition with Vincenzo Balzani, Carlo Landini, Pippo Molino, and Sonia Bo in Piacenza and Milan. He also attended masterclasses with Gérard Grisey and Mauricio Sotelo. His composition awards include the Comité de Lecture de l’IRCAM/Ensemble intercontemporain (2003), an Akademie der Künste Berlin scholarship (2005), Förderpreis at Salzburg Composers Competition (2013), and the Premio Abbiati award of Italian music critics (2016). His compositions have been presented in the Centre Pompidou, Museo Guggenheim in Bilbao, Gasteig in Munich, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, and at major festivals including Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik, Wien Modern, Festival Musica in Strasbourg, European Music Month in Basel, Gaudeamus in Amsterdam, Festival de Alicante, Venice Biennale, Milano Musica, Manifeste in Paris, Salzburg Biennale, MärzMusik in Berlin, Bavarian Radio’s musica viva in Munich, and Warsaw Autumn. His music is played by renowned ensembles and orchestras such as the Orchestra Sinfonica della RAI, Klangforum Wien, Quatuor Diotima, Ensemble intercontemporain, Trio Accanto, Ensemble Contrechamps, Ensemble 2e2m, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble Alter Ego, KNM Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Espai Sonor, Musikfabrik, Schola Heidelberg, mdi ensemble, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, and Trio Arbos, under conductors such as Sylvain Cambreling, François-Xavier Roth, Stefan Asbury, Susanna Mälkki, Enno Poppe, Beat Furrer, and Johannes Kalitzke. Cattaneo’s Violin Concerto was premiered at the Berlin Konzerthaus in 2008 by violinist Viviane Hagner and the Konzerthausorchester conducted by Lothar Zagrosek. His Self-portrait with Orchestra was premiered by the SWR Symphony under Emilio Pomàrico at the Musica festival in Strasbourg in 2010. The chamber opera La philosophie dans le labyrinthe (coauthored with the poet Edoardo Sanguineti) was staged at the Munich Biennale in 2006. In October 2013 Klangforum Wien premiered Cattaneo’s stage work parole di settembre to poems by Sanguineti in the Great Hall of Vienna’s Konzerthaus.

In June 2011 Stradivarius released an album of Cattaneo’s music performed by singer Petra Hoffmann (soprano), trombonist Carlos Gil and Ensemble Espai Sonor conducted by Voro Garcia. Cattaneo’s works have been commissioned notably by Klangforum Wien, Ensemble intercontemporain, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Ensemble Contrechamps, Munich Biennale, Berlin Konzerthaus, Saarland Radio, SWR, Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, CDMC in Madrid, Musica Festival in Strasbourg, MaerzMusik in Berlin, Musik Wattens, Sligo New Music Festival, RTÉ Lyric FM, Klangspuren Plus in Munich, as well as the Spanish and French Ministries of Culture.

Since 2010 Aureliano Cattaneo has lectured at the Escuela Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) in Barcelona. His works are published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni in Milan. He lives in Madrid.
