Air - Helmut Lachenmann
The work was written in 1968–69 as a protest against “polished orchestral Epicureanism.” The title refers to air above all in its aspect as the moment in which sound is transmitted. The fourpart work distances itself from traditional performance techniques and endows the sound spectrum of acoustic instruments with space beyond “what has until now been acceptable in the salon” in order to shatter the listener’s expectations and habits.
