is a freelancing trombonist living in Basel, Switzerland. He studied with Mike Svoboda at the Musikhochschule in Basel and with James Desano at Oberlin Conservatory (USA). His passion for contemporary music has led him to perform with many ensembles including Musikfabrik, Remix Ensemble, Collegium Novum Zürich, Ensemble Phoenix, and Ensemble Modern. Stephen is a founding member of the Eunoia Quintet, Les Trombones du Bâle, and Two New. With each of these groups he has commissioned and premiered numerous new works, working in close collaboration with composers. He has appeared internationally as a soloist, including at the Festival d’Automne in Paris and the Lucerne Festival. Since 2010 he has regularly performed music by Stockhausen and played in the world premiere of Sonntag aus Licht and as a soloist in Samstag aus Licht at Musica Viva Munich and in the world premiere of Mittwoch aus Licht with the Birmingham Opera Company.
