Aulbert, Frauke

Multivocalist, “Hamburg’s queen of the avantgarde” (Hamburger Abendblatt); a coloratura soprano boasting a vocal range of four octaves, specialising in contemporary vocal performance. In addition to her formal academic training, she has mastered overtoneand undertone-singing, multiphonics, and other timbre-altering techniques. As a vocal sound researcher she studies, describes, and sings many different genres including gamelan, jazz, chanson, dhrupad, and beatboxing. She then applies her discoveries in her own interpretations of contemporary vocal music. She has presented improvisations and has premiered performances of works written specially for her voice at festivals all over Europe. Her international concert tours have included Brazil, Tunisia, Georgia, and the United States. In 2015 she has performed, among others, in Australia, at the Curitiba International Biennial of New Music in Brazil, and at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Frauke Aulbert has won the Stockhausen Foundation’s 1st prize (for her performance of Indianerlieder). Her residencies in Rome and Paris were supported by grants from the Goethe Institute and the Cité Internationale des Arts. Other institutions supporting Frauke Aulbert’s concerts and artistic work include the Ministry of Culture of Germany, IMPULS New Musik, Stockhausen Foundation, and German Federal Foreign Office.

Frauke Aulbert studied in Kiel, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Hamburg (where she obtained a degree). She took part in masterclasses conducted by Lauren Newton, Sainkho Namtchylak, Michael Vetter, Michiko Hirayama, Linda Wise, and Amelia Cuni. Her diploma work was dedicated to the subject of overtone singing in contemporary music.
