Jurkūnas, Jonas

born in 1978, he started his music career from the jazz guitar. He studied composition with Vytautas Barkauskas at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, and continued them with Rimantas Janeliauskas. In 2002–3 he took part in the electroacoustic and instrumental composition courses at the Conservatoire National de Musique et de Danse in Lyon, where his teachers included Denis Lorrain and Robert Pascal. He also attended masterclasses run by Louis Andriessen, Meredith Monk, and Bang on a Can. He has presented his works at academic and jazz music festivals in Lithuania, Italy, the Netherlands, and the United States. Since 2008, he has been a member of the DIISSC Orchestra. He discovers and uses different areas of musical art, from academic to popular. His output includes chamber and orchestral works as well as electronic and multimedia. Stylistically, his music borders on minimalism and new tonality. He often uses simple, pulsating rhythmic patterns, and explores new timbres and forms of expression. Influences include Bang on a Can and Michael Nyman’s minimalism. He often resorts to energetic rock rhythms and aggressive sounds, mixing minimalist strategies with experimental and club electronics, elements of ambient, pop, jazz, and even romantic music.
