Blecharz, Wojtek

Born in Gdynia in 1981, he graduated with honours from the Fryderyk Chopin Music Academy in Warsaw, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in composition at the Department of Music of the University of California in San Diego— a centre specialising in the composition and performance of contemporary music. With Paweł Mykietyn, he co-organises the Instalakcje music festival in Warsaw’s Nowy Theatre. His output includes orchestral, chamber, solo and choral works, as well as dance and theatre music. On the latter, he collaborates with Jacek Łumiński and the Silesian Dance Theatre in Bytom. He has also composed music for companies such as Kokoro Dance (Vancouver), City Dance Ensemble (Washington), Coming Back to The Roots (Philadelphia), BalletMet (Columbus, Ohio), Theatre of Witness (Philadelphia), Powszechny Theatre in Warsaw, and Wybrzeże Theatre in Gdańsk.
In 2012, he received a scholarship prize “for perfection in music composition” at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt, and in 2013 he was selected as one of the five winners of the International Composition Competition “Composers for 2015” (Austria). In 2012 he was nominated for the Passport Award for classical music of the Polityka weekly, in 2013 – to the PKN Orlen Prize “Poles with Verve” in Art and Culture and to the Polish Radio Channel Three Yearly Award “Culture Man of the Year.”
