Nowak Aleksander

Born in 1979, he studied composition with Uljana Biłan-Leżańska, Aleksander Lasoń and Steve Rouse. His music is characterized by deeply expressive narrative and a combination of different, sometimes very distant musical phenomena, often connected by personal references.

He composes mostly instrumental and vocal-instrumental music; his pieces have been commissioned and performed by artists and ensembles such as Ricardo Gallén, Eugeniusz Knapik, Urszula Kryger, Marek Nosal, Piotr Pławner, Oksana Rapita, Piotr Sałajczyk, Alarm Will Sound, AUKSO, the Leopoldinum, Cellonet, Lasoń Ensemble, the Silesian String Quartet, London Sinfonietta, Pardubice Chamber Philharmonic, Studio for New Music Ensemble Moscow, New Music Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Silesian Philharmonic and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

Two albums dedicated to his music have been released: Fiddler’s Green (2009, Polish Radio Katowice) and 3x4+8 (2012, CD Accord).

Music for the stage plays an important role in his output. In 2011 and 2012 the Grand Theatre – National Opera in Warsaw presented a premiere production of his chamber opera Sudden Rain, directed by Maja Kleczewska. Currently, in co-operation with Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, he is working on a full-size opera commissioned by the National Opera Theatre in Poznań; the premiere is planned for spring 2015.
