Krystian Zimerman at Warsaw Autumn
International piano star Krystian Zimerman will play a single concert in Warsaw within the Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music. The concert will take place on 22nd September 2012 at the National Philharmonic in Warsaw. Mr. Zimerman will perform Witold Lutosławski's Piano Concerto on the occasion of the composer's 100th anniversary - exactly 25 years after the work's Polish premiere.
Krystian Zimerman belongs to the leading world pianists. His career began with a bang when he won the 1975 Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition. In the last few months, Mr. Zimerman has been performing the Lutosławski Concerto with the leading orchestras throughout the world, including in London, Paris and Berlin. He speaks thus about this experience: The [Concerto's] text is the same, the music is the same, but I now see so many details that eluded me back then. Perhaps because at that time, I was in the middle of it. People say music reflects the soul, and it is so. Now we can hear in this music all the tensions of the 1980s: the martial law in Poland, all the later events, the collapse and disintegration of our state up until 1988 and the total change in 1989. The Concerto reflects that entire period. It is incredibly dramatic, incredibly sad, full of incredible energy. That's something I didn't realise formerly (from an interview for RMF FM Radio, January 2013).
The Warsaw concert will be Mr. Zimerman's only Polish performance within his Lutosławski world tour. It will take place on 22nd September 2013 at 7:30pm, with the participation of the National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jacek Kaspszyk. After the intermission, Witold Lutosławski's Symphony No. 3 will also be performed. The programme actually mirrors that of 25 years ago, which was conducted by Lutosławski himself. In 1988, the two compositions were premiered at Warsaw Autumn; the Piano Concerto was actually composed for Krystian Zimerman. And just as 25 years ago, there will be an open meeting of the artists with the Warsaw public.
The concert will be part of the 56th Warsaw Autumn International Festival of Contemporary Music, and is organised by the Polish Composers' Union, the National Philharmonic in Warsaw and the Institute of Music and Dance. Negotiations with Mr. Zimerman spread over several months. I am delighted Krystian Zimerman accepted our invitation to play his only concert in Poland, says Andrzej Kosowski, official coordinator for the Lutosławski Year. We have been in personal contact since his January concert in London, when he gave a spellbinding performance of Lutosławski's Piano Concerto for a large audience, with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen. To have Zimerman play in Poland during the Lutosławski Year is simply a must.
