Nouvel, Pierre
Founder of the interdisciplinary collective Factoid, Pierre Nouvel worked on his first play as a videomaker with Jean-François Peyret (Le Cas de Sophie K., 2005 Avignon Festival). This led to other collaborations with directors such as Michel Deutsch, Lars Norén, Arnaud Meunier, François Orsoni, Hubert Colas, and others, directing his attention toward the interactions between stage and image. This research allowed him to develop the stage design aspect of his work in the fields of theatre, opera, and contemporary music. In 2011 at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, he codirected Austerlitz, a contemporary opera adapted from the W. G. Sebald’s novel, with music by Jérome Combier.
He created installations shown in institutions such as Centre Pompidou (as a part of the exhibition dedicated to Samuel Beckett in 2007), 2008 International Exposition in Zaragoza (French Pavilion), and La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris (2011).
In 2013, Walden Memories, an installation initiated by JeanFrançois Peyret and designed after texts by Henry David Thoreau, was shown at Le Fresnoy – Studio National des Arts Contemporains. is particular project was developed into a stage performance, Re:Walden, presented at the Avignon Festival in 2013. In 2014–15, Pierre Nouvel was a resident at the French Academy in the Villa Médicis (Rome), where he researched materials and technologies that play a role in the production of augmented spaces.
