Re-slide - Vito Žuraj

...is the fifteenth composition in my series of works bearing titles borrowed from tennis. In each of these pieces, a selected sports term is applied to music in an abstract manner. In Re-slide I treated the trombone as a natural instrument whose tuning changes with every movement or every opening of the valve. Numerous harmonic series are formed in this way, and these constitute a nontempered range of musical material for the piece. The trombone part contains numerous instructions concerning the slide positions used to produce quartertones. In this way I continue my work on a new way of composing for brass instruments, which began with my earlier works for horn. The English word “slide” in the title is both a musical term (part of the instrument) and a sports term for losing balance on the tennis court.
