The first countertenor in the Middle Kingdom (Zhongguo—the ancient name for China). His bright, powerful but flexible coloraturas, smooth passages from chest to head register, and rich musical expression have captivated the hearts of audiences. He started piano lessons at the age of four. He graduated in piano and singing from the Sichuan Occupation Art College. He accompanied dancers and singers on various occasions. His talent was discovered by his present voice tutor, Gong Jiandong. He gained recognition as Cherubino in a Shanghai Opera production of The Marriage of Figaro. His belcanto repertoire includes the role of Rosina in The Barber of Seville as well as arias by Handel and Vivaldi, whose Agitata da due venti perfectly exemplifies Ma Xiao’s excellent technique: he can freely transform his natural male voice into a mezzo-soprano, which also allows him to sing in pop style.
