Each type of Chinese instrument has its own poetry and a long-standing heritage, the rich tradition of each instrument having grown out of the wealth of classical works written for them. How can something new be developed from this tradition? How can these poetic instruments find new expressiveness and their beauty be seen from a different angle? These questions were Jia’s starting point when he wrote this piece. Jia Guoping has taken the fundamental tone and the basic elements of sound-production of each instrument and made them the basic material for this composition. This cell-like musical material unfolds and extends, the overall acoustic result being formed by the material being combined and exchanged in a variety of ways. In this manner, new sounds and forms of expression are sought for these old instruments.
