Sarwas, Jakub

Composer, conductor and instrumentalist, born in 1977 in Gliwice, Poland. He graduated from the State Primary and Secondary Music School in Gliwice (1996). In 1996–2001 he studied with Edward Bogusławski at the Department of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory in the Music Academy in Katowice. In 2002–6 he completed postgraduate studies with Johannes Fritsch (composition), Hans Ulrich Humpert (electronic composition) and Clarence Barlow (computer music) at the University of Music in Cologne. He then attended Johannes Fritsch’s masterclass and obtained the highest music university grade (Konzertexamen). During his studies he organised and produced concerts of electronic and chamber music. He is a member of the ISCM, Polish Section and the Music Society of Gliwice. He was also a member (and President in 2000–2) of the Polish Composers’ Union Youth Circle. Founder of Sarwas Project and Sarwas Ensemble, with which he cooperates as a composer, conductor, and instrumentalist. He composes chamber, symphonic, electronic, and electroacoustic music, as well as music for film and theatre. He frequently combines electronics and new media with various instrumental line-ups in musical, stage, and multimedia works.
