la Fuente, Benjamin de

born in 1969 in Bordeaux, he graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris where he studied composition with Gérard Grisey and improvisation with Alain Savouret. He also graduated from Paris’s Université VIII in 1999 with a master’s of musicology. He continued his studies at the IRCAM (1998) and as composer-in residence at the Villa Médicis in Rome (2001). He cofounded the SPHOTA music company, dedicated to musical theatre, in 2000, and the experimental pop band Caravaggio in 2003. He is active as a composer and an improvising violinist. His output includes works for both chamber and large ensembles, with or without electronics. He also worked for the theatre and cinema. He music is an invitation to another way to create, to think, to present on stage. His style is inspired of postspectral music and the energy of pop and jazz music.
He is a regular guest at various festivals including Musica, Agora, Résonance, Présences, Mancas in Nice, Radio France, Octobre en Normandie, son/mu 98, Ina-GRM, Multiphonie, Musique et Quotidien Sonore (Albi), IMEB festival (Bourges), Musiques en Scènes (Lyon), Octopus (Centre Pompidou). He has received commissions notably from the French Ministry of Culture, Radio France, IRCAM, INA/GRM, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, GRAME, IMEB.
His awards include the Hervé Dugardin Prize from SACEM (2002), a scholarship from the Académie des Beaux-Arts (2005), André Caplet Prize (2009) and the Grand Prix du Disque Charles Cros (2009) and Grand Prix Lycéen des Compositeurs (2010), both for the album La longue marche (published on Aeon).
He is also active as a lecturer in electroacoustic music at several French universities.
