Zych, Wojciech Ziemowit

Born in 1976 in Warsaw. In 1996–2001 he studied composition with Marek Stachowski at the Music Academy in Cracow. He continued his postgraduate studies with Peter-Jan Wagemans at the Rotterdam Conservatoire in 2001–2.
His compositional awards include the main prize for a string orchestra work with solo instrument at the Andrzej Panufnik Young Composers’ Competition in Cracow (2000). He has also received several scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture, Friends of Warsaw Autumn Foundation, and the Ernst von Siemens Foundation.
His Kaspar Hauser’s Friends, commissioned by German Radio and Warsaw Autumn, represented the Polish Radio at the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composer in Vienna in 2005. Différance, commissioned by Warsaw Autumn, was performed during this festival in 2010, earning the composer a nomination for the Koryfeusz Muzyki Polskiej award for Personality of the Year. Miłosz’s Postgrammar, commissioned by the Sacrum Profanum festival in Cracow, was performed in 2011 by the Asko | Schönberg ensemble. His works have also been featured at the UltraSchall Festival in Berlin, Musikhoest in Odense, London Sinfonietta Festival, Focus! Festival in New York, Musica Polonica Nova in Wrocław, International Cracow Composers’ Music Days, Velvet Curtain in Cracow and Lviv, Loop V in Etterbeek, and the 2013 ISCM World Music Days in Košice. His Symphony no. 3 for soprano, baritone, piano four hands and orchestra to words by Emmanuel Levinas was composed to a commission from the Wratislavia Cantans festival and performed there in 2013. His works have also been included on a CD with young composers’ music published by the Cracow Music Academy and DUX Records. His works are published by PWM Edition.

Wojciech Ziemowit Zych has participated in the Polish ISCM summer music courses in Radziejowice (1997), a young composers’ masterclass at the Music Academy in Gdańsk (1998), International Composition Course in Buckow, Germany (1999), and the Summer Courses of New Music in Darmstadt (2008). In 2006, he obtained a PhD in musical art. Since 2002, he has been lecturing music theory at Music Academy in Cracow.
In the 2012/13 season, he was composer-in-residence at the Cracow Philharmonic.
