Zagajewski Artur
Born in 1978 in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. He graduated with honours from the Music Academy in Łódź in the music theory class of Ryszard Daniel Golianek (2005) and the composition class of Bronisław Kazimierz Przybylski (2008). His works have been performed at festivals such as Arts Music Laboratory in Bydgoszcz, Fokus Łódź Biennale, Colours of Poland, contem.ucha at the Łódź Philharmonic, Music at the Old Cloister in Łódź, Acoustic, Electronic and Multimedia Projection Festival in Brno, Sound Screen Festival in Bydgoszcz, Ballet Meetings in Łódź (in cooperation with Paulina Wycichowska) and Musica Moderna at the Music Academy in Łódź. Between 2005 and 2008 he cooperated with video artist Michał Brzeziński, and their works were shown in galleries in Poznań, Warsaw, Szczecin, Katowice, Gdańsk and Wrocław. Since 2010 he has been cooperating with cellist Dominik Połoński.
He is an award winner at competitions such as 850 Jahre Cottbus – Musikalische Bilder einer Stadt (distinction, 2006), BMW Crash! of the Zachęta Contemporary Art Association in Szczecin (distinction in 2006 and main prize in 2007), Tadeusz Baird Young Composers’ Competition (2nd Prize in 2007 and 2009), Krzysztof Komeda Composition Competition in Słupsk (distinction, 2007), “Silver Glass” Children’s and Youth Contemporary Music Festival in Cracow (distinction, 2009), Grażyna Bacewicz Composition Competition in Łódź (1st Prize, 2009) and the in-OUT-side competition of the Sound Screen Festival in Bydgoszcz (main prize, 2009). In 2010 he was awarded the Eureka Łódź Prize. He published his research on rock music in lectures and publications for magazines such as “Glissando” and “Operomania”. He works as a junior lecturer at the Music Academy in Łódź and teacher of music theory at the Stanisław Moniuszko Secondary Music School in Łódź.
His major projects include a collective improvisation with the Electronic Music Computer Studio of the Music Academy in Łódź, directed by Krzysztof Knittel, and the Atelier of Photography of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź (presented at Warsaw Autumn 2009), a performance on Łódź’s Piotrowska St. involving the performance of uhnum by 23 musicians and 52 passers-by (with Zorka Wollny and Anna Szwajgier, Fokus Łódź Biennale 2010), and the premiere of the ballet Chronophotographic Scenes, commissioned by the Grand Theatre in Łódź for the Łódź Ballet Meetings in 2011 (choreography by Paulina Wycichowska).
During Warsaw Autumn 2011, a concerto/performance took place on Warsaw’s Chmielna St which he co-produced in collaboration with Zorka Wollny and Anna Szwajgier (2011).
2012 saw the premiere of his Stabat Mater, written for the Łódź Philharmonic.
