Pironkoff, Simeon

Born in 1965 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He studied music theory and piano at the Sofia Conservatoire, followed in 1985 by composition, conducting, and accompaniment studies at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, where he graduated in diploma in 1989 and 1990. In 1989–92 he worked as a conductor for numerous opera productions for travelling theatres, and gave concerts in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, and Austria. He was also director of various youth orchestras, and cooperated with theatres and free stages throughout Europe.
In 1992 he was appointed to professor of conducting at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts at the institute for orchestral leading. In 1992 he founded new music ensemble PHACE (formerly ensemble on_line). In 2000–3 he founded and organised the chamber music series Focus (in collaboration with the Austrian ISCM) in the Alte Schmiede in Vienna.
His works have been performed at many major festivals and venues in Austria, Italy, France, Bulgaria, Germany, Hong Kong, and Japan, including Hörgänge, Konzerthaus, ZeitTon Festival, Jeunesse Festival, Wien Modern, Wiener Festwochen, and Klangbogen (all in Vienna), Sofia Music Weeks, Pianissimo, and Musica Nova (all in Sofia), March Music Days in Ruse, Steirischer Herbst, Musikforum Viktring, Nuovi Spazi Musicali in Rome, Salzburg Festival, MaerzMusik, Bludenzer Tage Zeitgemässer Musik, WDR in Essen, INMM in Darmstadt, ISCM World Music Days, and many more.
Over the years, he has conducted leading orchestras and ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, die reihe, Wiener Collage, Ensemble neue musik wien, NewTon, music.lab, Ensemble Recherche, Ensemble 2r2m, PHACE, Vienna Saxophone Quartet, ensemble clarinetissimo, Musica Nova Sofia, Sofia Philharmonic, Sofia Radio Symphony, Slovak Philharmonic, Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk, Pro Arte in Paris, Filarmonia Veneta, APA Orchestra Hong Kong, Orchestra del Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza, Wiener Taschenoper, ORF Choir.
His accolades include the Herder Prize, Richard Wagner Scholarship, Alban Berg Foundation Scholarship, Working Scholarship of the City of Vienna, BMWFK Valuation Prize, Advancement Award of the City of Vienna, Austrian Government Scholarship. He has published a number of CD with twentieth-century music, and has lectured on Bulgarian music notably at the Institute of the Teatro Colón and Conservatorio Nacional de Buenos Aires, Bulgarian National Conservatoire, as well as broadcast transmissions and productions (ORF, German Radio, Radio Municipal de Buenos Aires, and Bulgaria).
