Roemer, Piotr

Born in 1988 in Cracow, he graduated from the violin class of Anna Rychlik at the Fryderyk Chopin State Secondary Music School in Cracow. In 2010 he obtained a bachelor’s degree in music theory from the Music Academy in Cracow, with tutor Krzysztof Droba. He continued his theory studies with Małgorzata Janicka-Słysz, obtaining a master’s degree in 2013. He also obtained a degree in composition under Magdalena Długosz from the same Academy. At present, he prepared a PhD in music theory with Małgorzata Janicka-Słysz and teaches theoretical subjects at the State Secondary Music School in Wadowice.
Winner of the Call for Sounds composers’s competition at the 2009 Warsaw Autumn, he was also granted numerous scholarships including from the Polish Ministry of Culture (2010), City of Cracow (2010), Sapere Auso Foundation (2011). His compositions have been performed at the Warsaw Autumn, Audio Art Festival in Cracow, Sound Screen Festival in Bydgoszcz, Wawel at Dusk Summer Festival in Cracow, Music Days of Cracow Composers International Contemporary Music Festival, and at student concerts held at the Music Academy in Cracow.
In 2012, on the recommendation of the Polish Composers’ Union, he was commissioned a chamber work by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the “Collections”, priority: “Compositional Commissions” programme. He took part in workshops for composers organised by the China Conservatoire of Music in Beijing. In 2014 he was composer-in-residence in Lisbon as part of the Miso Music Portugal (LEC) Minstrel project.
He has appeared as a violinist in various music ensembles in Poland and abroad. He also writes short stories (he has won prizes in several literary competitions) and articles about music. His works have been published in short story anthologies by Replika and Forma, in the 8th volume of Pro Musica Sacra. Word – Sound – Music (Academic Publications of the John Paul II Pontifical University in Cracow, 2010), in the periodical Music Theory. Studies, Interpretations, Documentation published by the Music Academy in Cracow, on the Warsaw Autumn festival website, and in the internet literary magazine Fahrenheit. An amateur Argentine tango dancer, he belongs to the community of Cracow milongueros. He develops his dancing skills training contact improvisation and body–mind centering. Piotr Roemer is a cofounder and ex-member of the Executive Committee of the “Il Cannone” Composition Students’ Academic Club at Cracow’s Academy of Music.
